A “What if Wednesday” Post
Nikola Tesla was born in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, now Croatia (Lee 2023) in 1856, and studied engineering and physics, but did not get a degree. After working with a telephone company in Europe, he moved to the United States and worked with the nascent power industry and Thomas Edison. Edison and Tesla differed on how lights should be powered, with Edison believing that DC (Direct Current) should be used and Tesla, AC (Alternating Current). A lot of Teslas inventions were patented by the Westinghouse Company of Pittsburgh, PA. He is considered by some to be one of the greatest inventors of all times (Rajvanshi 2007 and Rybak 1999).
Tesla was a prolific inventor, and discovered alternating current, the inducion motor, wireless power transfer (Larson 2021), radar and perhaps the rail gun (Macy 2022), and X-ray radiation (Vucevic, et al 2016). However, a number of other experiments did not have much success due to lack of funding. After his death the measurement unit of magnetic flux density, the tesla, was named for him bringing him out of historical obscurity. Today, he is probably more well known as being the namesake of the electric car company, Tesla. He is also considered a hero in Croatia (Larson 2021) and has an airport named after him.
His discovery of wireless power transfer led to modern devices such as cell phones and remote controls, and drove his interest in developing clean energy (Yousufzai, et al 2023). Alternating current now powers the light bulbs invented by Edison (Crane 2022).
